We can’t express our gratitude enought to Sara for taking such amazing shots of the Boulder workshop and then editing a Highlight clip! Thank you! Check out Sara’s blog The Happy Hoop: here
My mind is still reeling from all of the amazing teaching at the Hoop Technique workshop I attended this weekend in Boulder, Colorado. Spiral and Rich were fantastic and I have MUCH to share! I have photos and video and will be working on those in the next couple of days…but I wanted to give you a little “sneak peak”.
The above video was taken during a break as Rich demonstrated some of his Isopop techniques. Enjoy!

Hoop Technique Tour ~ Charlottesville, VA
Hoop Technique Tour – Charlottesville, VA
Space & Energy
For our fourth tour stop, we’re excited to share Hoop Technique in some of my (Spiral’s) old stomping grounds; lovely Charlottesville, VA. We’re looking forward to connecting and sharing with the steadily growing community there as well as the surrounding areas of Richmond and Washington D.C. We’re down to give a price break for those making the trek from D.C., as I know there will likely be a decent contingent. D.C. folks, I’m just sentimental about C’ville and we have a lovely spot to teach there, so please come join us!
This 2 day workshop will introduce the complete system of Hoop Technique theory with specific emphasis on the concepts of Space & Energy; day one focusing on Space, day two on Energy.
Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Energy, Time and Flow. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. Through exercises, theory and instruction, our focus on these concepts will increase awareness of what’s possible and encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.
*The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping.
*Energy refers to the physical and emotional energetic tones we can utilize to enrich and deepen the quality of our movement.
*Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat.
*Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement; effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. For us, Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance.
Some of the moves that will be covered:
Isolations, Extensions, Isopops, Isobreaks, Antispin, 3d Moves, Dynamic Stalls, Sustained Spinning, Variations of Reverses.
Exercises in Timing, Transitions, Sequencing and more will help ignite your creative fire.
Pre-Requisites:
This workshop is intended for hoopers of all skill levels. Our only prerequisites are the capability to waist hoop and to do a lift from the core. It’s recommended, but not required, that you are able to chest hoop and comfortably perform an off-body weave.

DVD Screenshot of Brecken Rivara
The Hoop Technique DVD will feature performances by some of the most talented and innovative hoopers in the world. Brecken Rivara is tearing up the hooping world right now with her unique creative style and she’s quite likely the humblest hooper you’ll ever meet, regardless of her recent accolade as Female Hooper of the Year from Hooping.org.

Hoop Technique Tour begins in Austin, TX, March 6th-7th, 2010
We’ve spent the last 6 months developing a modern theory of hoop dance that we’ll be introducing in our upcoming DVD, Hoop Technique. We’re excited to bring these ideas to the community through real-time instruction as well, so we’re taking it on the road. When we threw out that we we’re considering touring, we received an incredibly strong response from Austin (and Houston and San Antonio) region. So Austin, you asked, and here we come. Our first stop is Austin, TX. More >

Hoop Technique Theory
The Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary. We’ve oriented Hoop Technique theory around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. The focus on these four ideas was inspired by Laban theory, one of the most widely used systems of human movement analysis. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. This will increase awareness of what’s possible and available and, hence, encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.
The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping. Effort refers to the quality of movement; the energy, emotion and tone with which we execute movement. Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat. Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance.
