My mind is still reeling from all of the amazing teaching at the Hoop Technique workshop I attended this weekend in Boulder, Colorado. Spiral and Rich were fantastic and I have MUCH to share! I have photos and video and will be working on those in the next couple of days…but I wanted to give you a little “sneak peak”.

The above video was taken during a break as Rich demonstrated some of his Isopop techniques. Enjoy!

Hoop Technique Tour – Charlottesville, VA
Space & Energy

For our fourth tour stop, we’re excited to share Hoop Technique in some of my (Spiral’s) old stomping grounds; lovely Charlottesville, VA. We’re looking forward to connecting and sharing with the steadily growing community there as well as the surrounding areas of Richmond and Washington D.C. We’re down to give a price break for those making the trek from D.C., as I know there will likely be a decent contingent. D.C. folks, I’m just sentimental about C’ville and we have a lovely spot to teach there, so please come join us!

This 2 day workshop will introduce the complete system of Hoop Technique theory with specific emphasis on the concepts of Space & Energy; day one focusing on Space, day two on Energy.

Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Energy, Time and Flow. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. Through exercises, theory and instruction, our focus on these concepts will increase awareness of what’s possible and encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.

*The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping.
*Energy refers to the physical and emotional energetic tones we can utilize to enrich and deepen the quality of our movement.
*Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat.
*Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement; effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. For us, Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance.

Some of the moves that will be covered:
Isolations, Extensions, Isopops, Isobreaks, Antispin, 3d Moves, Dynamic Stalls, Sustained Spinning, Variations of Reverses.

Exercises in Timing, Transitions, Sequencing and more will help ignite your creative fire.

Pre-Requisites:
This workshop is intended for hoopers of all skill levels. Our only prerequisites are the capability to waist hoop and to do a lift from the core. It’s recommended, but not required, that you are able to chest hoop and comfortably perform an off-body weave.

Notes:
Please dress comfortably and bring water. Smaller hoops are recommended for the material we will be covering. We will be bringing Hoop Technique hoops and have them available for sale at the event. If you’d like to pre-order one of our unique, high-performance hoops, please send us an email.

Time & Date:
Saturday July 17: 3-6:30 pm
Sunday July 18: 3-6:30 pm

Location:
Montessori Community School

We’re excited to be bringing our second tour stop to Los Angeles, CA hosted by Firegroove. This 2 day workshop will introduce the complete system of Hoop Technique theory with specific emphasis on the concepts of Space & Effort, day one focusing on Space, day two on Effort.

Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. The focus on these four ideas was inspired by Laban theory, one of the most widely used systems of human movement analysis. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. This will increase awareness of what’s possible and available and, hence, encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.

The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping.
Effort refers to the quality of movement; the energy, emotion and tone with which we execute movement.
Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance. In this portion of the workshop we’ll work on seamlessly transitioning between moves

Some of the moves that will be covered:
Isolations, Extensions, Isopops, Isobreaks, Antispin, 3d Moves, Dynamic Stalls, Sustained spinning, several on and off-body reverse methods, and more.

We’ve spent the last 6 months developing a modern theory of hoop dance that we’ll be introducing in our upcoming DVD, Hoop Technique. We’re excited to bring these ideas to the community through real-time instruction as well, so we’re taking it on the road. When we threw out that we we’re considering touring, we received an incredibly strong response from Austin (and Houston and San Antonio) region. So Austin, you asked, and here we come. Our first stop is Austin, TX.

This workshop will introduce Hoop Technique Theory and will be aimed at advanced beginners through expert hoopers. Our only prerequisites are the capability to waist hoop and to do a lift from the core. It’s recommended, but not required, that you are able to chest hoop and comfortably perform an off-body weave.

Ok, on to the content…

Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. The focus on these four ideas was inspired by Laban theory, one of the most widely used systems of human movement analysis. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. This will increase awareness of what’s possible and available and, hence, encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.

________________________________________________________________________________________

The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping. In this section we’ll be focusing on isolation and extension theory & technique, as well as isopops & isobreaks.

Effort refers to the quality of movement; the energy, emotion and tone with which we execute movement. Here we’ll focus on creativity-enhancing exercises as well as sustained spinning, dynamic stalling and framing.

Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat. This section will focus primarily on variations of reverses as well as tips and exercises for form and speed.

Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance. In this portion of the workshop we’ll work on seamlessly transitioning between moves.
________________________________________________________________________________________

The Hoop Technique workshop will happen over the course of 2 days. We’ll devote 1.5 hours of instruction to each of our 4 primary movement concepts with an additional half hour of movement integration/ individualized instruction each day.

Please dress comfortably and bring water. As we’re traveling, we’ll have some Hoop Technique-style hoops for sale, but encourage you to bring your own, preferably smaller, hoop. If you’d like to pre-order one of our unique, high-performance hoops, please send us an email.

Rich & I have spent the last 6 months developing a modern theory of hoop dance that we’ll be introducing in our upcoming DVD, Hoop Technique. We’re excited to bring these ideas to the community through real-time instruction as well, so we’re taking it on the road. Our first stop is Austin, TX. We’re hoping some folks from Houston and San Antonio will feel like undertaking a weekend road trip, ideally carpooling with fellow hoopers.

Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary. We’ve oriented Hoop Technique theory around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow.
Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat. Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance.

The Hoop Technique workshop will happen over the course of 2 days. We’ll devote 1.5 hours of instruction to each of our 4 primary movement concepts with an additional half hour of movement integration/ individualized instruction each day.

We’ll be covering a plethora of specific moves as well as exercises to polish skills and encourage self-expression.

Cost is $120
