Hoop Technique Tour begins in Austin, TX, March 6th-7th, 2010
We’ve spent the last 6 months developing a modern theory of hoop dance that we’ll be introducing in our upcoming DVD, Hoop Technique. We’re excited to bring these ideas to the community through real-time instruction as well, so we’re taking it on the road. When we threw out that we we’re considering touring, we received an incredibly strong response from Austin (and Houston and San Antonio) region. So Austin, you asked, and here we come. Our first stop is Austin, TX.
This workshop will introduce Hoop Technique Theory and will be aimed at advanced beginners through expert hoopers. Our only prerequisites are the capability to waist hoop and to do a lift from the core. It’s recommended, but not required, that you are able to chest hoop and comfortably perform an off-body weave.
Ok, on to the content…
Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. The focus on these four ideas was inspired by Laban theory, one of the most widely used systems of human movement analysis. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. This will increase awareness of what’s possible and available and, hence, encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.

The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping. In this section we’ll be focusing on isolation and extension theory & technique, as well as isopops & isobreaks.
Effort refers to the quality of movement; the energy, emotion and tone with which we execute movement. Here we’ll focus on creativity-enhancing exercises as well as sustained spinning, dynamic stalling and framing.
Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat. This section will focus primarily on variations of reverses as well as tips and exercises for form and speed.
Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance. In this portion of the workshop we’ll work on seamlessly transitioning between moves.
